Is your organization prepared for the Internet of Things? (Hint – most are not)
The enterprise world was caught off-guard by the mobile revolution. The first Android device was released in 2008, by 2016 there were about 350 million units being delivered per quarter and still, many organizations are only now beginning to get comfortable with mobile.
Those who moved in time are now reaping the benefits and leapfrogging the competition. Many of those who did not are now on an agonizing downward spiral, as they get squeezed and outcompeted.
Think for a second about what mobile has brought to the table. Every employee started to carry a pocket computer with them 100% of the time and, with the right software, information flowed faster throughout the organization and old manual processes and reporting improved, sometimes dramatically. Access to better information paved the way for management to be able to make better decisions.
Now imagine what is going to happen when every single piece of your organization has its own tiny computer attached to it. In a dramatic change, not unlike the first industrial revolution, enterprises are going to start tracking every imaginable metric about every single process, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, forever. With continuous access to data, change initiatives will no longer be based on intuition, surveys or even best practices. They will be based on evidence, cold hard real-time data that almost guarantees the outcomes.
What do you think is going to happen when an organization can see, in real time, every possible metric about their business? Data do not lie, data represent reality. High quality real-time data will help management detect opportunities left and right, transforming the enterprise into a much leaner powerhouse of efficiency. Organizations who do not adopt a winner IoT strategy will simply cease to exist, as they will no longer be able to make it against hyper-efficient competitors.
I can help
Your days are already packed with today’s problems and making time for planning the future is sometimes hard, but we are at a point where those who don’t plan today will find themselves in a very tough spot in the future. Let me give you a very small example: imagine you are in the market for a fire alarm to be installed in your home. You have the option to buy a traditional alarm that beeps or one that, when a fire is detected, will send a shutdown signal to all your gas appliances and ring your mobile and landline to wake you up. If that choice seems clear, now imagine you are in the business of manufacturing fire alarms – which one will you decide to make?
By the time a competitor has a strong IoT strategy, it may be too late for you to react. Manufacturers of traditional fire alarms who do not adapt will go out of business, IoT is such a game changer. These changes will not happen overnight, of course, but by the time you start to see them, it could be too late to recover. The time to act is now.
If your organization had (or is having!) a hard time making the most of mobile, you already know how challenging it can be to find the right guidance in adopting and getting results out of new technology. Don’t get caught with your guard down, a good IoT strategy is something you need today if you want to be prepared for what is coming tomorrow and safeguard your position.
Taking the first step is easy, email me and explain where you are at right now. If you are only starting to think about IoT for your organization, that is great. Need to persuade CxOs to start investing in IoT? Email me and I’ll help you craft the right message.
